The new app Touratech Connect provides the complete package of motorcycle data. It is not only about important vehicle information, but also about personal performance on the motorcycle. What's more, the app turns the cell phone into a multifunctional display.

Hardware and app "Touratech Connect":

With "Touratech Connect", the accessory specialist from the municipality Niedereschach (Germany) turns the smartphone into a universal display in the motorcycle cockpit. The app presents a set of values on the phone display and enables a differentiated analysis of vehicle data and personal performance while riding.

Normally, most of the "bragging" is more or less generous overestimates of each rider. Until now. Because the completely new Touratech Connect app now provides concrete data.

The hardware

Touratech Connect consists of a smartphone app and a hardware component. The hardware is housed in a dust- and waterproof box that is permanently installed in the vehicle as a "dongle" (usb key/adapter). The dongle plugs into the existing connectors in a vehicle-specific manner. Therefore, the Touratech Connect has no restrictions as there are for the analysis tools in the OBD2 interface.

The electronics are able to read the data generated by the vehicle's own sensors directly from the CAN bus. The values are recorded passively, which means that the device cannot be misused to manipulate the vehicle.

As the smartphone has established itself as the information hub for everything, for phone, navigation, entertainment and communication on board the motorcycle, the Touratech Connect has no display of its own and transfers all information to the cell phone.

Communication between the hardware component and the smartphone takes place via an easy-to-pair and stable Bluetooth connection. The Touratech Connect uses the "Bluetooth Low Energy" standard, which guarantees a long battery life. Another important advantage is that other connectivity functions, such as telephony or navigation based on the "Bluetooth Classic" standard, can continue to be used in parallel.

The smartphone app

The smartphone app, available for the two major mobile operating systems iOS and Android, turns the cell phone into a freely configurable real-time display.

In addition to basic values such as speed, engine speed, outside temperature or tank level, the Touratech Connect can also display user-defined vehicle data. Data such as the temperature above which the engine can be driven in a sporty manner, or the engine speed for shifting gears when driving economically or dynamically - indicated by a shift flash. Also of interest is the number of turns taken, the number of gear changes on a route or the current engine power.

Numerous parameters can be queried to improve one's driving style. For example, the braking force (current, average, maximum) can be displayed, allowing conclusions to be drawn about the reserves still available in individual braking behavior. The lean angle can also be analyzed with respect to the utilization of the limit range. Performance parameters such as acceleration from zero to 100 or cornering speed can also be recorded.

In total, the Touratech Connect records more than 60 values related to the motorcycle's operating status and riding dynamics. The data is logically divided into eight functional areas: engine, lighting, brakes, switches and levers, riding dynamics, extremes, special functions and status (see table for details).

Values can be saved during a "session" (while the dashboard is open) or across sessions for a motorcycle profile.

Functional areas

The Touratech Connect application is clearly structured and divided into eight functional areas, making it easy for the user to select the required data.

Engine: Gear, engine speed, average rpm in motion vs. overall, engine temperature, throttle opening and much more.

Lights: Status of headlights, turn signals..

Brakes: Brake force values, front, rear, maximum, average, while driving and much more.

Controls and levers: Check the status of handbrake lever, foot brake lever, throttle, side stand..

Driving dynamics: Acceleration, lean angle, speed, cornering speed, sliding duration..

Special functions: Time measurement (zero in ...), gear changes, pauses (with temperature-dependent reminder function), riding time and stop time, currently activated power, calorie counter (driver), 2 gear change flashes (eco and race)

Statuses: Tank level (in liters), mileage, outside temperature, extreme outside temperature value.

Individual configuration

For the configuration of the display, the user has almost unlimited individualization options. First, the pilot can decide what data he wants to see at all, and then configure the display according to his wishes. An integrated "Designer" helps with this. The placement of the display elements is as free as their size and the assignment of fields.

Numerous parameters are preconfigured with a default value, but can be defined by the user, such as the speed limit for the shift flash function.
