If your water-cooled R1200GS or GSA did not come from the factory with Dynamic ESA suspension, or you simply want to switch to a manually adjustable shock absorber, the Dynamic ESA shock absorber can be fitted to your R1200GS or GSA Touratech Extreme is the best performing and most durable shock absorber on the market.

They let the engineers of TouratechTo build the impact of their dreams with this product. When they asked for the absolute highest performance impact they could imagine, they developed the Touratech Extreme Suspension. If NASA built a suspension for the R1200GS and ADV, they would be happy with this one.

You know the feeling... You see a bump at the last minute and feel the force of the blow radiate through your body as the impact bottoms out. Well, the Touratech Extreme Shock has advanced technology to make bottoming out a thing of the past. This shock has a secondary compression damper that kicks in when the shock nears the end of its travel.

Combine this "background control technology" PDS with a remote reservoir, fully adjustable high and low speed compression damping, adjustable rebound damping, remote reservoir, low friction seals and 50% more preload adjustment than other shocks on the market and you begin to see why this is the shock of choice for R1200GS riders who want the ultimate in performance.

"I couldn't be more pleased with my Touratech Suspension. I used the Extreme rear shock along with the Explore front shock and together they performed flawlessly for 15,000 miles on my trip from Seattle to the southern tip of Argentina. I now recommend it for my GlobeRiders customers and any adventurous motorcyclist embarking on a serious trip." -Helge Pedersen

NOTE: If your GS came from the factory with ESA dynamic suspension, you will need to run the DDA deactivation unit (P/N: 01-45-5879-0, sold separately) for the riding modes to function properly in the computer. If your motorcycle came equipped with standard shocks, you do not need this unit.

Summary of functions

Bottoming Control with secondary compression damping technology prevents bottoming out. The position-dependent damping system (PDS) is like a hydraulic pillow at the end of the stroke.

The remote reservoir, made of high-strength aluminum, keeps the fluid cool and ensures pressure stability in the shock, resulting in improved performance. The reservoir also increases fluid volume by 50%, extending shock absorber life.

Adjustable shock length, allows 8 mm length adjustment (-4 mm to + 4 mm) to adjust the ride height of your bike.

Adjustable high and low speed compression damping allows full control of the shock setting to give you the precise handling characteristics you want in any conditions.

Adjustable rebound damping allows you to adjust the ride characteristics to suit your preferences.

50% more preload adjustment than other shocks on the market. A generous 15 mm adjustment allows for proper spring preload settings for a fully loaded R1200GS. Most shocks have between 8 and 10 mm, which is not enough to accommodate varying amounts of long-haul luggage or even a passenger.

The hydraulic spring preload adjustment allows quick changes in preload by turning the knob by hand.

A floating piston separates air and oil to prevent foaming. This technology ensures that your shock absorber will perform consistently and uniformly even in harsh environments.

Cold-forged 6082 T6 aluminum shock absorber body, machined to exacting standards, offers high strength and maximum heat dissipation.

High-strength stainless steel bushings ensure that the shock absorber mounting points reach the distance.

Low friction seal with integrated Teflon back-up ring maximizes performance and extends shock absorber life.

Large 16 mm high-strength shaft made of chrome-molybdenum steel for maximum strength and durability.

Available in a variety of spring rates to suit rider weight requirements.

Damping configuration for R1200GS or GSA fully loaded right out of the box.

Key aspects to consider when selecting a discharge

PDS Bottoming ControlImagine riding your fully loaded R1200GS on the 'Road of Bones' in Siberia and not having to worry about bottoming out the bike. The Position Dependent Damping System (PDS) makes this possible with a secondary damping piston that creates progressive damping. This allows you to keep the primary compression shock setup a little softer and more comfortable because the (PDS) shock will activate when needed like a hydraulic pillow to avoid bottoming out at the end of the shock stroke.

Remote tank: this piggy back style remote reservoir is made of high-strength aluminum and is designed to keep fluid cool and ensure pressure stability on shock, resulting in better performance. The larger oil capacity results in longer service life.

Adjustable high and low speed compression damping: separate settings for high-speed and low-speed compression damping allow full control of the shock setting to give you the precise handling characteristics you want in any condition. This allows you to control how the bike handles in a high-speed corner separately from how it behaves when absorbing a bump.

Adjustable rebound damping: right out of the box, this shock is ready for adventure with its rebound damping levels set to ride a fully loaded R1200GS. The rebound damping is also fully adjustable, so the ride can be customized to your preference.

Hydraulic preload adjustment: with a Touratech Extreme Shock, the preload can be adjusted hydraulically by turning the knob by hand.

50% more preload: when loading your R1200GS with luggage and all the gear for a weekend trip or extended ride, the bike will sag under the weight of the load. Most shock absorbers are NOT designed to handle this. With Touratech Suspension, you can adjust the spring preload to bring the bike back to level. With the full 15mm adjustment, you can raise the rear of the bike up to 1.8 inches to compensate for the load, restoring proper geometry for optimal handling and overall bike feel. Most shock preload adjusters only have an 8 to 10mm adjustment that can only raise the rear of the bike 1.2 inches.

Floating piston superiority: the suspension Touratech uses a floating piston design that offers the best damping performance because it physically separates the nitrogen gas from the oil. Most shock absorbers use an oil emulsion that allows the oil to mix with the nitrogen gas in a foaming process that essentially "thins" the oil and prevents the shock from performing properly. When the oil "foams," the bike will easily sag and also gush too quickly, resulting in erratic handling and an unstable ride.

With the floating piston design from Touratech Suspension, there is a physical separation of oil and nitrogen gas, which means you can ride your R1200GS on rough roads all day long and enjoy consistently high performance. Why buy a shock whose performance gets worse the more you ride it? Before you invest in a new suspension, make sure it's a floating piston design.

Stainless steel bushings: while many aftermarket shock absorbers use aluminum bushings where the shock is mounted to the motorcycle, the suspension Touratech uses high-strength, non-corrosive stainless steel. This creates a strong, rigid connection that is important for loaded touring motorcycles. Stainless steel bushings protect against corrosion and seizure and offer minimal maintenance and longer life.

Low friction seal: our seals have a backbone that virtually eliminates frictional interference in damping activity. In other shocks, the seal deforms as the damping pressure increases and causes friction on the shaft. The suspension Touratech is equipped with a patented low-friction seal that is supported by a Teflon back-up ring. This Teflon backbone prevents the seal from deforming and eliminates shaft friction even at high pressures. The result is better performance, greater reliability and longer service life, even in harsh environments.

Oversized high strength shaft: while most manufacturers use a 14 mm carbon steel axle, the suspension Touratech uses a 16 mm high-strength chrome-molybdenum steel alloy.

Aluminum shock body: some manufacturers use a steel shock body to reduce cost. Touratech uses cold-forged 6082 T6 aluminum for the shock body because it is lightweight, strong and durable. It also dissipates heat 30% more effectively than steel, resulting in more stable and predictable damping that offers better handling and a smoother ride. A cooler shock absorber will also have more consistent damping and a longer service life.

Customized springs: the suspension Touratech is available in a variety of spring ranges so that we can make sure your shock absorber has the right spring for your needs.

Fully repairable: the entire suspension Touratech is fully repairable and can be customized or rebuilt by Touratech-USA or any qualified suspension technician.

Adjustable shock length: the Touratech Extreme Shock also features 8 millimeters (-4mm to +4mm) of length adjustment that allows you to adjust the ride height of your R1200GS. While other manufacturers use an M16 thread, we have chosen an M20 thread which is twice as strong as M16 and is better suited to handle the forces of a fully loaded motorcycle in rough terrain.
