Why do I need this?
Motorcycle manufacturers' original shock absorbers: The shock absorbers found on new motorcycles are designed to be economical and fit the needs of a 77-kilogram rider with an average of 15 pounds of luggage. As a result, they often meet the minimum standard for function. The performance of a stock shock absorber often does not respond with the performance that is expected. Under heavy loads, the stock suspension "collapses" easily and does not offer sufficient damping or preload adjustment range. They are not repairable and, under heavy loads, are prone to seal overheating and other failures. The rider often feels the motorcycle "too soft" and it does not handle properly. The OEM dynamic suspension found on the water-cooled R1200GS uses a valving system designed for automotive shock absorbers, and is not reactive enough to give the motorcycle the traction and comfort it needs.
After market shocks: Most after market shocks are made with performance in mind, but are not designed for use on a fully loaded touring motorcycle. Most can only support the rider's weight and do not offer good handling or have adequate preload adjustment. They are also not durable enough to go the distance on a fully loaded touring motorcycle. Floating piston superiority: the suspension Touratech uses a floating piston design that offers the best damping performance because it physically separates the nitrogen gas from the oil. Most shock absorbers use oil emulsion damping that allows the oil to mix with the nitrogen gas in a foaming process that essentially "thins" the oil and prevents the shock from working properly. When the oil is "foamed," the motorcycle easily bottoms out and also rises too quickly, resulting in erratic handling and an unstable ride.
With the floating piston design of suspension Touratech, there's a physical separation of oil gas and nitrogen, which means you can ride rough roads all day long and enjoy consistently high performance. Stainless steel bushings: while many shock absorbers use aluminum bushings where the shock absorber is mounted to the motorcycle, Touratech Suspension uses high-strength, non-corrosive stainless steel. This Suspension Touratech DDA / Plug & Travel Suspension is manufactured with the same precision components and elements that have already proven their worth in our shock absorber tubes, tested over thousands of kilometers in the harshest conditions. The heart of this suspension is the high-performance DDA valve developed and patented by Tractive. Thanks to this, the damping can be adapted to any driving situation within tenths of a second. Our shock absorber tubes, which are subjected to high stresses during long journeys, have a larger piston diameter and thus a larger oil volume. As a result, they have better cooling and a higher damping frequency. The shock absorber tube and the suspension itself are therefore more stable and the seals do not suffer as much.
Low friction sealThe "backbone" of our seals virtually eliminates frictional interference in damping activity. In other shock absorbers, the seals deform as damping pressure increases and cause clogging in the shaft. Suspension Touratech is equipped with a patented low-friction seal that is backed by a Teflon back-up ring. This Teflon "backbone" prevents the seal from deforming and eliminates clogging at the shaft, even at high pressures. The result is better performance, greater reliability and longer service life, even in harsh environments.
Oversized high strength shaft: the suspension Touratech uses a 16 mm high-strength chrome-molybium steel alloy.
Aluminum shock tube body: some manufacturers use a steel body to reduce cost. The suspension Touratech uses cold-forged 6082 T6 aluminum to make the tube lighter, stronger and more durable. It also dissipates heat 30% more effectively than steel, resulting in more stable and predictable damping that offers better handling and a smoother ride. A cooler body will also have more consistent damping and a longer service life.
