GoreTex allows the rider to feel totally dry. How does it do that? With a fabric that, on the outside, repels moisture and, on the other, transfers that sweat to the outside of the garment.
For the avoidance of doubt, we will begin by briefly explaining the technology of Gore-Tex® fabric, also known as GTX. This type of membrane-type textile fabric is widely used in the field of sportswear for outdoor activities. Its advantages are its lightness, impermeability and efficient breathability, which make this material a fundamental part in the design of clothing for the practice of sports or outdoor activities.
The main characteristics of Gore- Tex® garments are:
Guaranteed waterproofing.
Protection against wind, rain and cold.
Lightweight fabric.
Maximum breathability.
What makes garments made with GTX fabrics even more special is the function of the membrane composed of nine billion pores per square inch, creating micropores so small that a drop of water is not able to pass through them. Because they are so tiny, they create a barrier that is impossible for water or wind to penetrate, ensuring that under rainy, wet or windy conditions you can stay at the right temperature.
When placed - in some cases - between the outer fabric and the lining of the garment, the membrane works effectively. Depending on the composition of the outer fabric, it goes through a process that provides greater water repellency to provide greater benefits to the garment.
Now that we know what GTX fabric is and how it works, we want to explain that there are different ways of integrating Gore-Tex® fabricsin motorcycle jackets: The conventional layer - removable or not - and laminated Gore-Tex.
The fabric, in this case, is included in winter motorcycle jackets as a separate layer. It usually has a small membrane inside the outer layer, providing waterproofing from the inside. The result of this is that the jacket will get soaked as a result of the rain, but your body will always stay absolutely dry. It doesn't matter how much it rains or if you spray yourself for hours with a hose in your backyard. It will stand up to it without a flinch.
The fact that the waterproof membrane is independent of the outer fabric offers an advantage: the possibility of removing the layer that some jackets offer. Thus, on sunny days we can save an extra layer and go cooler. An example of a motorcycle jacket with a removable Gore Tex layer would be Revit's Defender Pro, which we'll talk about a little further down.
Laminated Gore Tex is as close to magic as you'll see in the world of clothing. In this case, the membrane is fully integrated into the fabric of the jacket, which gives it a very unique property: the garment completely repels water. This means that, no matter how much it rains, water will never penetrate the fabric and, therefore, the jacket will not get soaked with the consequent increase in weight. In addition, before entering any enclosed space, just shake off any water that remains on the garment and you'll see how it will jump out of it as if it were dust.
Given its enormous advantages, the appearance of Gore Tex, and especially the laminate, will significantly increase the price of the garment. Gore Tex forces all clothing brands to integrate their membrane with the standards and in the terms that they establish, and that entails an increase in production costs that are obviously reflected in the final price.
